Sombra del Agua emerged as a symbol of elegance and tradition in San Cristóbal de las Casas—it is the city’s oldest hotel. With roots dating back to 1907, the building witnessed the creation of a verse by Chiapas-born poet Jaime Sabinesin 1956: “Es la Sombra del Agua.” After over a century of watching over the city, the hotel was renamed in 2017 in honor of the poet, following a meticulous renovation led by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH).
