Twenty-five years after Amores Perros, acclaimed Mexican filmmaker Alejandro González Iñárritu unveils Sueño Perro, an immersive installation that revisits the emotional and visual echoes of his groundbreaking debut. Held at LagoAlgo, the show is a sensory homage to celluloid, memory, and the city that shaped the film’s legacy.

When Amores Perros premiered in 2000, it didn’t just mark Iñárritu’s directorial debut — it shook global cinema. Gritty, violent, and deeply emotional, the film’s interwoven narratives became a cornerstone of contemporary Mexican filmmaking, launching a new wave of directors who would go on to conquer Hollywood.

A Cinematic Tribute

The Sueño Perro exhibition lands at LagoAlgo as a tribute to the film’s enduring impact, bringing to light never-before-seen footage once cut and shelved during production. These raw visual vignettes, still strikingly relevant today, also celebrate the tactile materiality of 35mm film—its grain, flicker, and warmth.

Visitors navigate a dimly lit labyrinth illuminated by analog projectors, continuously playing unseen fragments of Amores Perros. The experience is amplified by a custom-composed soundscape, enveloping the audience in a hauntingly intimate cinematic atmosphere.

“More than a million feet of film were left on the editing room floor. On this anniversary, I felt compelled to return and explore those abandoned fragments. This installation is not a tribute, but a resurrection—an opportunity to see and feel what never was”.

The Experience

Carolina Alvarez-Mathies, Artistic Director of LagoAlgo, describes the installation as “an invitation to engage with a living legacy that transformed the narrative language of cinema.” That legacy continues to resonate—evident in this year’s 4K restoration of the film, which premiered at Cannes to critical acclaim.

In keeping with the global reverberations of the film, Sueño Perro will also travel to the Fondazione Prada in Milan(September 18, 2025 – February 26, 2026) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) in spring 2026.

The installation runs from October 5, 2025, to January 4, 2026. Visitors must register in advance at  lago-algo.mx(registration opens soon).
