It’s America’s birthday this weekend and New York City is planning its biggest soiree yet.
The US is celebrating its 250th anniversary, and the spectacular firework are set to be the most ambitious of its kind. For the 50th edition of the annual Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks, the show is lighting up the city like never before, launching a simultaneous firework performance from the lower East River near the Seaport, the lower Hudson River, and directly off the Brooklyn Bridge. Expect 85,000 shells in 30 colors, a live musical score, and a laser show on the bridge. The only question is where to watch it from.
For the view from above
Enjoying the NYC skyline is one of the most sought-after activities when visiting the big apple, and with a show set to take over the skies there’s no better place to watch than from up above. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is the obvious answer for those who want to watch both rivers light up at once from 1,100 feet in the air. Their celebration is set to run from 7:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and will include access to all three levels and a themed food menu. For adults looking to go, tickets are $250 a head.
Another classic option is Top of the Rock at Rockefeller Center, offering a similar elevation with a livelier atmosphere: a live DJ, two drinks, and a hot dog included at the same price point, running until midnight. For something more nightlife-forward, try the Edge — the highest outdoor sky deck in the city. There, a Mastercard-presented party will be hosted with immersive installations and uninterrupted skyline views.
For an on-the-water experience
Hop aboard to the Grand Banks, the historic schooner Sherman Zwicker moored on the Hudson. One of the most elegant options on the water, the restaurant offers fresh oysters, Champagne, and a front-row view of both the daytime Parade of Sails and the evening fireworks.
Perched on the 16th floor of the Conrad New York Downtown hotel, Leonessa offers a four-hour premium open bar alongside passed hors d’oeuvres. including caviar. Tickets start at $250.
For something more low-key
The city is hosting official free viewing zones along the FDR Drive, which will offer direct sightlines to the East River show. Those opting for this option should be prepared for strict security — large bags, coolers, and chairs will not be permitted. Brooklyn Bridge Park and the Seaport will require free tickets issued by the city, available at july4.events.nyc.
Whatever the choice, the city is worth staying up for tonight. New York does not turn 250 twice.
